Butterfly Garden

This instructional unit is a step-by-step, hands-on learning program. Throughout the unit, students will experience nature and develop a foundation for gardening. Students will participate in the process of locating, sorting, and gathering materials including seeds, soil, plants, etc. to build a butterfly garden on site. They will also learn about the life cycles of plants and butterflies, and the symbiotic relationship they have. The final product results in a permanent perennial and colorful garden.

Goals:
-Create and design an outdoor butterfly garden.
-Explore the gardening process, including identifying and planting plants that attract butterflies.
-Learn about the importance of proper seeds, soil, water, and sun for growing plants.
Special Requirements:
Space for an actual garden on site, and access to water. Plants and soil for the equivalent of a 10-foot by 12-foot flower bed will be provided.
