CCE Celebrates Read Across America Day
On March 2nd, the Center for Creative Education celebrated Read Across America Day! Launched in 1998 by the National Education Association (NEA), Read Across America Day brings the joys of reading to students of all ages. It is celebrated every year on March 2nd—Dr. Seuss’s birthday!
This year, CCE invited Eric Telchin to read his latest children’s book, The Color Factory, to students at The Foundations School. This moment was extra-special because Telchin is also a CCE board member, and The Color Factory inspired the theme for CCE’s upcoming annual fundraiser, A Colorful Evening To Remember.
In the book, the color factory has strict rules about how to make each factory-approved color. But when someone makes a new color that isn’t factory approved, they must figure out how to get rid of it, or else they will have to shut the color factory down—forever.
Telchin’s fellow guest readers were CCE board member Michele Kukla and CCE Director of Schools Kevin Kovacs. The students loved the book’s colorful images and interactive elements. Many students seemed to embrace the book’s message of breaking the mold and trying new things.
After the reading, students were able to ask Telchin questions about what it takes to become a published author and learn about how he developed his idea for The Color Factory. The third-grade students were particularly excited to speak with Telchin, since they will be performing a stage adaptation of The Color Factory at CCE’s upcoming event, A Colorful Evening To Remember.
Through this reading of The Color Factory, students celebrated many of the things that make reading so great. They were able to connect with classmates and visitors alike. The book inspired them to create and tell their own colorful stories, and it took them on a journey to a whole new world with nothing more than words on a page.
CCE’s annual fundraiser, A Colorful Evening To Remember, will take place at CCE’s Northwood campus on April 9th. The evening will include cocktails, dinner, and a performance from students at The Foundations School.
