A Storytelling SELebration
“I take my time and think about it.”
This is the catchy refrain from Queen Nur’s Story Selebration, an interactive storytelling performance offered through the Kravis Center’s arts education program Kravis on the Road. Queen Nur recently visited students at The Foundations School, where she used folktales and modern stories to teach students social-emotional learning skills.
Queen Nur began her performance by teaching the audience an original song. The room was buzzing with excitement as the students clapped and sang along. Queen Nur then launched into a series of stories that highlighted different social-emotional skills, such as self-awareness, social awareness, building relationships skills, responsible decision-making, and self-management. As she went through the stories, she asked the students questions and kept them engaged through music.
In her final story, Queen Nur brought many students on stage to play the different roles. When she finished her tale, all the students celebrated by dancing along to the music. Not only did the students have a chance to watch live theater; they were thrilled with the opportunity to participate. They had a lot of fun, while learning something at the same time!
This performance by Kravis on the Road was an exciting way to engage our students in both the arts and social-emotional learning. Using the arts as an intentional tool to engage students in the learning process is one of the things that makes The Foundations School’s approach to teaching and learning unique. Kravis on the Road brings arts education to students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience live theater. You can learn more about Kravis on the Road here.
